Ignition Parts

Post by 17thairborne »

Distributor Cap Question: Which one is correct? I've found a few listings for FC engine distributors, generally the IGW series distributor comes up. There are two caps referenced on various forums discussing restoration of FC 151 engines. The two caps listed are:

AL 352 (ordered through NAPA)
AL 137 and Cover for AL137

These caps should also come with a cover that screws down over the plug wires which are simply pressed onto pthe ignition prongs. Does anyone have a photo of the distributor, the Autolite dataplate to compare to?

THanks

Okay you CA-1 owners. Here's another mystery. Where does one find the distributor spring clips to hold down the cap. It seems evryone makes the clips and brackets for the Delco caps, but no one carries those for the Autolite distributor. The parts dealers all say they will not fit on the Autolite version. NAPA has the cap and cover (AL 352 and AL353) but cannot find the clips.

Does anyone have the dimensions for the spring clips and brackets? I'll need to take the dist out next weekend and post some photos of everything I've found so far. What model distributor is everyone running in their WAukesha engines? I have an IGW4301.

Thanks

Got the distributor out. Took about 30 minutes given the tight squeeze between the engine and the frame of the blade. Here are a few shots of the removal operation.

Photo 1: Before the operation. Wrong distributor cap and very dirty. And yes Virginia...that is chicken sh!# on the top of the cap. The dozer was the favorite sunset roost of the former owner's chickens. They marked their territory.

Photo 2: Inside guts...rusted through. No wonder there was no spark  I sure have my work cut out for me :D :D

Photo3: Post operative...the data tag is obliterated. I hope this is an IGW-4301.

G503 member W. Winget just sent some great drawings of the spring clips for the distributor. It's details like these that make life easier for us laymen trying our first restoration. Thanks very much for the drawing :D

Worked on the distributor a bit this afternoon. I removed the remaining finish, took off the corroded data plate, steel-wooled the surface and heat dried the parts. I used aircraft stripper and washed with water. The body is somewhat corroded, unfortunately and when finished will not look as nice., but it will have to do. I cross checked the part number for the body (IGW 1170) with that in the TM and they do not match. The manual states (IGW-2170) Not sure what that means, but in every respect the body is exactly as shown in the manual. Here is the latest photo.

Just got the rivets in for the Autolite data plate. The distributor is finished (except a few parts need to be cadmium plated, but that will come later). I spent the better part of the afternoon installing the distributor and measuring various lengths for wiring harness. Sorry for the crummy photo below.

Back to the distributor. Since I failed to take detail photos of the notches I will post these images from the TM. I tried to match it as close as possible. I filed into the distributor body to match the cap. Here is what is in the TM. Of course since my distributor body had no notches so it must not be the correct one! Dang it again! Here is what the manual shows for notches, which matches the groves in the AL 352 cap. As you can see the notches are right where the clip would secure the cap to the body. I timed the engine according to the specification in the manual and the rotor lined up with the No 1 plug wire, but it was about 1-2 degrees off. Not sure how that will impact the engine!

Help with any comments folks...I'm leadin' in the dark! 8) (Steevie Wonder Smiley!)

thought I would add a link to Ray's site where he lists all the ignition parts... Ya never know when a link or site can come down so Ill cut and paste what Ray wrote thetre as well, for future reference.

link to the actual posting:

http://syltech.websitetoolbox.com/post/ ... cs-3616431

What is written there:

NAPA crossed the part numbers

Distributor Cap AL 352
Rotor AL 32
Points CS 709
Distributor Cover AL 353
Condenser AL 38

The distributor cap has to be altered
You have to remove the band that project from the bottom so it is flush and then you file a indexing groove 1/4 inch wide at a 45 degree angle under the spring clip boss to match the projection on the distributor
