Re: CA-1 Carb

Not having much luck with the final carb disassembly. I'm using the TM recommended procedure, but many of the screws and plugs are frozen. I don't want to strip the threads. Progress is much slower that I figured. Just goes to show the adage for rebuilding; Nothing works on the first attempt, it takes 2 times the estimated cost and 3 times the estimated time and you will always be left with at least 4 extra parts left over

With every day, with every page of research I find I learn yet another seemingly insignificant but impactful detail about MV restoration. Here is an example:

With Regard to the dissasembly of the Carburetor: The TM states: Before removing the throttle plate read note "A" on p. 22 then proceed to remove the throttle plate screws, plate and shaft assembly. I read the note which does not mention anything about riveted or peened screws. After following the instructions for note "A" I completely striped one of the screws and barely got the other one out leaving a half-assed dissassembly with some damage (DANG IT AGAIN!)

What i found in the Zenith 161 Series manual, (not the Military TM) which I searched feverishly for after the fact, is the following: File off riveted or peened end of throttle plate screws (68) flush with throttle shaft. Use care not to damage throttle plate or throttle bore. (Oh I get it, the screws are peened in and unless you file them down on the back side they will not simply screw out!!

Note to self: Unless you have a great tutor, long-standing hands-on experience, or clairvoyance, get the correct manuals/procedures and read them about 5 times so you understand what needs to be done before you take one thing apart.

Okay...I'll be better next time! :P
